Despre St. Anthony's Shrine, Kochchikade
St. Anthony's Shrine in Kochchikade is a Roman Catholic church on the northern edge of central Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is one of the city's best-known places of pilgrimage, visited by Catholics and by Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims alike. It is also a place of remembrance, because it was one of the churches attacked on Easter Sunday 2019.
The story behind it
Local tradition traces the shrine to Fr. Antonio, a Catholic priest from Kochi in India. In the Dutch period, when Catholic worship was restricted, he is said to have held masses in secret in nearby Pettah. When the Dutch learned of it he moved north to Mutwal, where fishing families asked him to help hold back the sea that was eating away their shoreline. Tradition says he did, and that the Dutch were so impressed that they gave him land where he could practise his faith openly. A small chapel was built there, and the records show it was enlarged in 1806.
Over the following century the chapel grew into a large church. Its reputation for answered prayers drew people far beyond the parish, and today it is as much a shared shrine of the city as a Catholic one. On Easter Sunday 2019 it was struck in a coordinated attack that killed worshippers, and the church has since reopened to the community.
What to look for
- The statue of St. Anthony inside the church, the focus of devotion for visitors of many faiths.
- The mix of people at the entrance and in the pews, with worshippers of different religions praying side by side.
- The busy streets around Kochchikade, where the harbour and fishing history of this coast still shape daily life.
- The security checks at the gate, a visible reminder of the 2019 attack and of how seriously the community protects the shrine.
Tips for your visit
- Allow about 20 to 30 minutes for the shrine itself, longer if you want to sit quietly or join a service.
- Dress modestly, keep your voice low and ask before photographing worshippers. Check current opening hours and service times before you go.
- Expect bag checks at the entrance and travel light.
- Pettah, Kotahena and the Mutwal waterfront are all close, so the shrine pairs well with a longer walk through north Colombo.
See it on a quest
Faiths of the Shoreline: Kotahena is a good way to see the shrine, because you reach it on foot as one stop on a longer route through the surrounding streets. The app tells you about each place as you arrive and sets a puzzle based on what is in front of you, so you look closely at the shrine and its neighbourhood. The quest's focus on the faiths of this shoreline fits a church that people of many religions visit. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join.
