Despre Crucea din Pajiște
Crucea din Pajiște is a memorial cross on Strada Pajiștei in Brașov, linked to the old Romanian quarter of Schei. According to local history it was set up in 1788 and carries an inscription in Cyrillic. It is a small monument, but it connects you to the Junii, the young men's tradition that shaped community life in Schei.
The story behind it
The cross dates from 1788 and follows two earlier crosses on the same spot. Like them, it has its inscription in Cyrillic, the script used in the Romanian church tradition of the time. That detail alone tells you how long this corner of Brașov has kept its own identity.
The cross is tied to the Junii, an association of young men from Schei. It was never only about traditional dances and marching. It was built around coming-of-age rituals for boys and young men. Many of them spent long stretches away from Schei working as shepherds, and some later became soldiers. A man stayed among the Junii until he married, so membership marked a particular stage of life.
What to look for
- Look closely at the Cyrillic inscription on the cross, which is the clearest sign of its age and of the community that raised it.
- Note the date of 1788, and remember that this cross replaced two earlier ones, so the spot has been marked for longer than the monument you see.
- Think about the Junii as you stand there: this is a place tied to the rituals of young men growing up in Schei.
- Notice how the cross sits on Strada Pajiștei, a street name that points to the meadow (pajiște) the monument is named after.
Tips for your visit
- It is an outdoor monument, so there is nothing to enter and no need to plan around a visit. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough to see it properly.
- Combine it with a walk through the Schei district, since the cross makes the most sense alongside the neighbourhood that created the Junii tradition.
- Daylight is best for reading the inscription and finding the exact spot, and it is easier to explore the surrounding streets then.
- Wear comfortable shoes, as getting here and exploring Schei on foot involves walking through residential streets.
See it on a quest
The cross is one stop on Jewel of Brasov: Exploring the Enchanting Schei, a self-guided walk through the Schei quarter. You reach it on foot as part of a longer route through the area, the app tells you about each place as you arrive, and you solve a puzzle based on what is in front of you. It is a paid quest, and one ticket covers the whole group. You can start whenever you like, with no guide and no group to join.
