Despre Royal Avenue
Royal Avenue is a tree-lined approach on the edge of Royal Victoria Park in Bath, close to the Gravel Walk and just a short stroll from the Royal Crescent. It is one of the best places in the city to see Georgian Bath at a walking pace, because the great curve of the Crescent and the green space around it are right beside you.
The story behind it
The area around Royal Avenue is best known for its neighbour, the Royal Crescent, a sweeping row of 30 townhouses built in the late 18th century to designs by John Wood the Younger. The fronts are lined with 114 columns, and counting them is a favourite game for visitors walking past. Bath's Georgian streets have been used many times as a film and television backdrop, and the Crescent is a regular choice for period dramas.
One of its best small stories is about a front door. In 1972 a resident painted theirs yellow, which led to a dispute with Bath City Council. A public enquiry followed, the resident won, and the yellow door stayed. Nearby, the Gravel Walk is a quiet path behind the Crescent that Jane Austen fans know from her novel Persuasion, set partly in Bath.
What to look for
- The long, curving front of the Royal Crescent, where the repeating columns make the whole terrace look like a single building.
- The yellow door, the one house that stands out from the rest of the terrace and carries the story of the 1972 dispute.
- The rhythm of the 114 columns, which are easy to count if you walk slowly along the front.
- The Gravel Walk itself, a narrow, secluded path that feels far from the traffic of the city centre.
Tips for your visit
- Allow 20 to 30 minutes to take in the Avenue, the Crescent and the Gravel Walk, longer if you want to wander into Royal Victoria Park.
- Go early in the morning or in the late afternoon for softer light on the stone and fewer people on the lawn in front of the Crescent.
- The area is open to walk through, and the houses are private homes, so stay on the pavement and keep noise down. Check current opening hours for any museum or house open to visitors.
- Royal Victoria Park, the Circus and the city centre are all within easy walking distance, so it fits well into a longer loop.
