Despre Picasso Museum
Picasso Museum opened on March 9, 1963, and holds the distinction of being the first museum ever dedicated to Pablo Picasso, and the only one created during the artist's lifetime. The museum was founded at Picasso's own wish, proposed by his longtime friend and secretary Jaume Sabartés, who worked tirelessly to bring the vision to life. Located in five adjoining medieval palaces on Carrer Montcada in Barcelona's La Ribera neighborhood, the museum is housed in a setting that reflects the city's rich history. The oldest palace, Palau Aguilar, dates back to 1386, making the museum itself a journey through architectural history. The collection began with Sabartés's donation of 574 works by Picasso, establishing the museum's core. In 1970, Picasso himself donated an additional 920 works, demonstrating his commitment to Barcelona and ensuring the museum would be a comprehensive chronicle of his artistic development from his early years through his mature style. Picasso personally supervised the renovation of these historic palaces from France, ensuring his life's work would be properly housed and honored.
