From the 15 Years of Community Mural, this 3 km loop crosses the Old Mill Avenue Bridge and passes the Hayden Flour Mill and Tempe Beach Park, following a playful troll story with puzzles. Couples, friends and families with school-age children get about an hour of light exploring around downtown. Anyone hoping to stay indoors or out of the Arizona sun, or wanting a live guide to question, should pick something else.

Where does the troll walk in Tempe start?
It starts at the 15 Years of Community Mural in downtown Tempe and finishes back at the mural. In between, the app leads you past the C.T. Hayden House, the Old Mill Avenue Bridge, Tempe Beach Park, the Hayden Flour Mill and "A" Mountain. You can start whenever you like.
Does the route go through Tempe Beach Park?
Yes. Tempe Beach Park and the Answering the Call Memorial are a stop on the route, reached after the Old Mill Avenue Bridge and followed by the Hayden Flour Mill and Silos. The app guides you there from stop to stop, so you do not need a separate park map.
How long does it take and can we pause?
Plan on about an hour for roughly 3 km of walking, plus extra time if you linger at the lake or the mill. You can pause at any point, take a break for food or drinks on Mill Avenue, and continue later from where you stopped.
Is it good for kids, and can we play as a group?
It is tagged family friendly and suits school-age children, who tend to enjoy the troll story, the magic and the treasure hunt puzzles at each stop. One ticket covers your whole group, so a family or a group of friends can solve the puzzles together.
When is the best time to do it?
The route is open around the clock but works best in daylight, when the puzzles are easier to see. It is entirely outdoors in the Sonoran Desert, so wear a hat and sunscreen, bring enough water, and start with a fully charged phone or a power bank.
